“What if consent wasn’t the last step in city planning — but the starting point?”

“What if consent wasn’t the last step in city planning — but the starting point?”

FPIC+ flips the script on urban governance, making inclusion, transparency, and resilience the foundation of every decision.

New Article Release — “FPIC+: Consent-Based Accountability for the Urban Commons”, available on 15 August 2025 at Progressive Insights, https://lnkd.in/gFEWzpeb

After years of observing how governance really works at the grassroots, I’ve developed FPIC+, an expanded framework that takes the principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (hashtag#FPIC) beyond its roots in Indigenous rights — and adapts it to inclusive urban governance.

This isn’t just theory. FPIC+ creates systems where consent is the starting point for public decision-making, urban commons management, and equitable investment.

Why this matters?
In today’s cities, formal and informal governance often collide. Persons with disabilities, the elderly, and the neuro-diverse are too often excluded. FPIC+ offers a way to integrate voices, balance power, and ensure accountability.

In this piece, I cover:

• How FPIC+ evolved from my fieldwork in Indonesia’s Inclusive District Platform (hashtag#IDP)
• The three pillars: Transparency & Accountability, Inclusion & Social Justice, Sustainability & Resilience
• How FPIC+ can guide investments in inclusive infrastructure, DRR, WATSAN, circular economy, low-carbon supply chains, and more
• Why consent can be a leveraging point for systemic change

In a world where urban complexity is accelerating, FPIC+ is a high-leverage tool for institutional transformation — ensuring vulnerable groups are not just consulted, but truly empowered.

Comments, critiques, and challenges are welcome — let’s test, refine, and strengthen this idea together 🙏
