🌿 Strengthening Forest Carbon Governance in Indonesia: Advancing REDD+ Nesting 🌿
On 19 August 2025, a landmark multi-stakeholder dialogue in Jakarta—hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, in collaboration with the UN-REDD Programme and the Green for Riau initiative—brought fresh momentum to REDD+ Nesting in Indonesia.
The dialogue spotlighted the Green for Riau program as a leading example of subnational implementation, showing how local action can align with national and global climate ambitions.
With Presidential Regulation PR 98/2021 on Carbon Economic Value under review to improve access to voluntary and compliance carbon markets, aligning project-level REDD+ activities with jurisdictional programs is more urgent than ever.
💡 Getting the nesting approach right is essential to:
✅ Ensure environmental integrity
✅ Unlock carbon finance opportunities
✅ Support Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 goals
Key highlights from the workshop:
🔹 UN Environment Programme, under UN-REDD, shared its draft technical paper “REDD+ Nesting in Indonesia & Implications for Green for Riau”, aligned with ART-TREES scenarios.
🔹 Over 100 stakeholders joined—including the Riau Provincial Government, national ministries, the embassies of the UK & Norway, BPDLH, FAO, The World Bank, UNEP-WCMC, KI, Verra, ART-TREES, Plan Vivo, and project developers.
🔹 Panel discussions and breakout sessions explored governance, carbon accounting, and safeguards.
🔹 A multi-stakeholder forum was established under the Ministry of Forestry to continue advancing forest carbon governance and nesting.
